A\u00c2\u00a0 Daily Mirror Investigation<\/a> has revealed how a senior Tory enjoyed a visit to a luxury private US health clinic at UK taxpayers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 expense.<\/p>\n

A health watchdog admitted that Care Quality Commission (CQC) funded Lord David Prior\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trip, which cost \u00c2\u01416,000.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt’s a disgrace that the taxpayer picked up the tab for his controversial trip,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Gail Cartmail, Unite assistant general secretary.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the time he was the chair of health watchdog CQC and is now Cameron\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s minister for NHS productivity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His official expenses were previously recorded as \u00c2\u01413,000 in November 13 but the health watchdog has recently been forced to apologise for what they called an \u00e2\u20ac\u0098error\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

Labour has called for a full investigation into Lord Prior\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s expenses saying there must be a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098full explanation of how Lord Prior\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s expenses contained false information about the US trip\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis will raise further questions about Lord Prior\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conduct before he was appointed a minister,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Justin Madders, shadow health minister.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt a time when NHS budgets are under the most pressure they have been in a generation, patients will question the wisdom of taxpayers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 money being used in this way,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A CQC spokeswoman said that Lord Prior\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 2013 study trip had been inaccurately recorded and that McKinsey had organised it but did not fund the trip. The trip was entirely funded by CQC.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere needs to be an explanation into how the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098error\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in Lord Prior’s official expenses occurred and how such an \u00e2\u20ac\u0098error\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 remained for two years,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Gail.<\/p>\n

The Mirror investigation also exposed how Lord Prior attended a meeting in Windsor about how to replace the NHS with an insurance-based system.<\/p>\n

The event organised by McKinsey, covered \u00e2\u20ac\u0098building a national health insurer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098private health insurance growth opportunities \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the new frontier\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

TTIP<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt’s no wonder the Tories won’t act to protect the NHS from the trade deal called TTIP which gives US private healthcare companies new rights over our NHS which could lead to an irreversible sell-off. David Cameron must act to protect the NHS from TTIP,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n

McKinsey makes millions of pounds from supplying services to the NHS and also makes money from advising private health clients to do the same.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labour MP Graham Morris said that private health companies have their own agenda which includes introducing private health insurance and making the NHS a marketable commodity.<\/p>\n
