{"id":6282,"date":"2015-10-14T16:45:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T15:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6282"},"modified":"2015-10-15T12:50:35","modified_gmt":"2015-10-15T11:50:35","slug":"spiralling-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6282","title":{"rendered":"Spiralling debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>As society benefits from continual progress in science and technology and other advances, the idea that you would be materially better off than your parents \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and that your children would be better off than you \u00e2\u20ac\u201c was an accepted truth that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nNow, however, things are about to change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/student\/news\/parents-concerned-their-children-will-be-in-debt-as-cost-of-higher-education-and-living-rise-a6690731.html\">A survey published yesterday<\/a> revealed the extent of parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 anxiety about their children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future economic prospects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOf the 1,100 UK parents polled, 75 per cent believed that their children would need more financial support in early adulthood than they did themselves, after accounting for rising tuition fees, rising living costs and property inflation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOver a third said they expected to help with their children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first house deposit and just over a third also said that they would continue to provide financial support to their children after they finished their education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worries over their children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s financial futures are borne out by fact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em><strong>Explosion in borrowing<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/payday-loan-bank-debt-strangling-6500153\">Citizens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Advice reported last month <\/a>an \u00e2\u20ac\u015bexplosion\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in borrowing among young people, with the number of people aged 17 to 24 coming to the bureau for debt advice skyrocketing by more than 20 per cent in the year to June.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nTheir data showed that the average young person had accumulated more than \u00c2\u014112,000 in unsecured debt by the end of 2012, which amounted to 200 per cent more than before the financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nCitizens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Advice also highlighted that the average young person\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s debt to income ratio is 70 per cent. This means that for every \u00c2\u014110 that a person between 17 and 24 earns, a jaw-dropping \u00c2\u01417 is spent repaying debts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhile the rise in debt among young people has mostly come from climbing tuition fees, pay day and bank loans are becoming a bigger and bigger part of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nCitizens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Advice findings mirror another <a href=\"http:\/\/pwc.blogs.com\/press_room\/2015\/03\/pwc-uk-unsecured-debt-set-to-rise-to-nearly-10000-per-household-by-the-end-of-2016.html\">report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)<\/a> earlier this year, which found that the average UK household will have \u00c2\u014110,000 in unsecured debt by the end of next year. The total amount of unsecured debt rose by 9 per cent last year to an all-time high of \u00c2\u0141239bn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nCarl Packman, who has <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/payday-lending-global-virus\/\">written two books about payday loans<\/a>, argues that the growing debt mountain facing Britons, young ones in particular, shows just how far we are from what chancellor George Osborne has hailed an economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile the line is that the British economy is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098motoring ahead\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, albeit not as fast as last year because of the Eurozone\/emerging market drag, with personal debt forecasts as they are, the house of Great Britain is mostly built on sand,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Packman noted today on Left Foot Forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs the country tries to improve productivity levels, indebted populations become distracted at work,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he continued, citing a study that found more and more people spend hours thinking about debt while on the job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs the cost of living becomes higher, we take on more debt in full knowledge that a pay rise is not forthcoming,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe next generation of employees will leave university (if they choose to go) with not just student debt, but dangerously high levels of consumer debt and the average Briton will owe \u00c2\u014110k by 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em><strong>Breathtaking<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s breathtaking that anyone would think this is progress.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite assistant general secretary Steve Turner also highlighted that growing levels of personal debt, especially among young people, belied the notion that a miraculous economic recovery was underway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYoung people know better than anyone that this so-called economic recovery is little more than a sham. They are the ones most cruelly attacked by this government,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re being forced into insecure, low wage work with few prospects while being kicked out of their homes and into poverty with cuts to welfare support.
