{"id":6303,"date":"2015-10-15T16:43:25","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T15:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6303"},"modified":"2015-10-16T12:00:01","modified_gmt":"2015-10-16T11:00:01","slug":"heart-of-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6303","title":{"rendered":"Heart of steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite will be urging ministers to keep the coke ovens at Redcar burning and develop an industrial strategy with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098heart of steel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 at tomorrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (October 16) steel summit in Rotherham.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe summit comes amid warnings that the UK steel industry is at a crisis point following the closure of SSI in Redcar and the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s continued refusal to keep the coke ovens at the site burning until a buyer can be found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nPointing to major infrastructure projects, such as HS2, Unite will warn that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s much vaunted \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Northern Powerhouse\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098March of the Makers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 will be empty rhetoric, unless it intervenes to support steelmaking in Redcar and the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUrging ministers to take action to protect UK steel from the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098dumping\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of cheap steel from China, Unite will press ministers to adopt a similar approach to their German counterparts in developing an industrial strategy that supports skilled jobs in the UK and ensures British industry reaps the benefits of major infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite assistant general secretary Tony Burke, who will be attending the summit, said that the steel industry is \u00e2\u20ac\u015bat crisis point\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnless the government pursues an industrial strategy with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098steel heart\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 then soundbites like \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Northern Powerhouse\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098March of the Makers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 will be nothing more than empty rhetoric for communities who rely on skilled jobs in steel and manufacturing,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMinisters need to start by keeping the coke ovens at Redcar burning and supporting the wider steel industry through these turbulent times, so that British industry can benefit from major infrastructure projects, such as HS2,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Burke added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA failure to do so, he noted, will \u00e2\u20ac\u015btorpedo any ambition to rebalance the economy\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and will \u00e2\u20ac\u015blay waste to communities and key industrial assets.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe clock is ticking,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Burke went on to say. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time for the government to stop washing its hands of the industry and intervene to support steel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Germans do it through an active industrial strategy and the Italians do it by intervening directly in their steel industry making a mockery of ministers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 claims that EU rules forbid it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unite will be urging ministers to keep the coke ovens at Redcar burning and develop an industrial strategy with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098heart of steel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 at tomorrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (October 16) steel summit in Rotherham. &nbsp;
