{"id":6364,"date":"2015-10-20T14:27:33","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T13:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6364"},"modified":"2015-10-20T15:47:20","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T14:47:20","slug":"dark-day-for-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6364","title":{"rendered":"Dark day for steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Today (Tuesday October 20) Tata steel confirmed its plan to cut 1,200 jobs in Scunthorpe and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite warned that this \u00e2\u20ac\u0098dark day\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 would damage steel companies and hit supply chains hard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a dark day for the UK steel industry, for the workers and the communities whose livelihoods depend on steel,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Tony Burke, Unite assistant general secretary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be working closely with Tata to find alternatives and to save as many jobs as possible,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite accused the UK government of failing the heed the warning signs and washing its hands of the steel industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s announcement sees steel production effectively come to an end in Scotland,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Tony.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the loss of approximately 300 jobs through the closure of the Dalzell plate mill and closure of the Tata Steel facility in Clydebridge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 900 jobs will be lost at Scunthorpe with the closure of the plate mill and Dawes Lane coke ovens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe knock on effects of today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news combined with Caparo and the closure of Redcar through the supply chain will be devastating,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Tony.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTrade unions, the industry and business groups are all united on the need for the UK government to support the steel industry,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is calling on the government to support a key component of the UK economy by taking action to stop the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098dumping\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of cheap Chinese steel and help with high energy costs and business rates to ensure that major infrastructure projects use British steel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe impact on the Scottish economy which is also being hammered by job losses in North Sea oil will be severe unless there is urgent support,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Pat Rafferty, Unite Scottish secretary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be pressing the Scottish government to live up to its promise to do everything it can to support the steel Industry in Scotland and save jobs,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite warned that Sajid Javid is becoming increasingly isolated by his failure to support the steel industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe UK government should take note of the Scottish government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more proactive response and act to save out steel across the UK,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Rafferty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today (Tuesday October 20) Tata steel confirmed its plan to cut 1,200 jobs in Scunthorpe and Scotland. &nbsp;
