The tax credit cuts are continuing to move their way through Parliament; last night (October 20) Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s motion calling for the government to rethink their damaging plans was defeated.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today (October 21) in PMQs, David Cameron said he was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdelighted\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that Tory MPs have supported his plan to slash tax credits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Or, put another way, he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happy that from April 2016 the earnings threshold at which tax credits can be withdrawn looks set to plummet from \u00c2\u01416,420 to \u00c2\u01413,850 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c leaving three million low-paid workers \u00c2\u01411,300 worse off per year.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cameron\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also pleased that his plans weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t held up by his own MPs because there was a worry they might be.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Heidi Allen Tory MP for South Cambridgeshire<\/a> told the Tories in the debate preceding last night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vote that they shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t go ahead with the cuts, saying \u00e2\u20ac\u015bto pull ourselves out of debt, we should not be forcing those working families into it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

While former Tory chair Lady Sayeeda Warsi tweeted, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bFamily credits provided my parents the necessary buffer to allow us to study and work our way out of poverty.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Columnist James Kirkup<\/a> from the Telegraph<\/em> struck a similar tone when he attacked the government for \u00e2\u20ac\u015btaking away money from millions of people who work for low wages.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But the government was successful last night with a majority of 22 supporting it; it won with 317 to 295 votes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s significant unhappiness with these cuts because they weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t in the Conservative\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manifesto: the electorate just didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t vote for them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the Tories will slam lowest-paid workers the hardest. This prompted Lady Meacher, a crossbencher in the Lords, to say she would table a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfatal motion<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that would put a stop the tax credit cuts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But it appears Cameron is willing to do anything to make sure these brutal cuts are inflicted on people across the country.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Menacing <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The government warned crossbench peers that if they stuck to their guns, they could face a drive to weaken the powers of the Lords.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This menacing behaviour succeeded; Meacher rescinded her fatal motion in favour of one asking the government to respond to the IFS calculations that three million families will lose on average \u00c2\u01411,300.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meacher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s motion could still have an impact, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll see next week how it will unfold.<\/p>\n
