As the UK steel industry teeters on the brink of collapse \u00e2\u20ac\u201c devastating entire communities after more than 5,000 jobs have been shed in the last month alone \u00e2\u20ac\u201c former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine said today (October 26) that it was a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bgood time\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to lose your job.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b[Steel job losses are] very painful for the people who suffer but, on the other hand, if you are going to lose your job this is probably as good a time, because the number of new jobs in the economy today is one of the most exciting features of this economy compared with many others,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Heseltine told Sky News today.<\/p>\n

Rage <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Steelworkers sacked from the SSI plant in Redcar reacted with rage to Heseltine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One steelworker who had worked at the Redcar plant for more than three decades told the Mirror<\/a>, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI think the remarks made by Mr Heseltine are disgraceful, but they do not really surprise me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 reaction has been a joke.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another SSI worker who has lost his job pointed out how the closure of the plant had had a ripple effect throughout the entire community.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI spoke with my window cleaner, and he told me 10 people had cancelled on his round,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt hits everyone, all the people in the supply chain, and beyond. For Lord Heseltine to say that just shows out of touch the Tories are with real people.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Heseltine is indeed far removed from the average UK worker \u00e2\u20ac\u201c making the Sunday Times Rich List<\/em> in 2013, he has an estimated wealth of \u00c2\u0141264m.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He has previously made outlandish and out-of-touch comments about the economy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the peer told the Independent two years ago<\/a> that growth in the UK was sluggish because UK workers lacked aspiration; that they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnational will\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The \u00e2\u20ac\u015bexciting\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 number of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnew jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Heseltine lauded today will mean little to highly skilled Redcar steelworkers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As the Guardian has highlighted<\/a>, without the steel industry, long-term prospects for those in the area are dismal, as the town sits on already deprived borough.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Redcar has been slammed by \u00c2\u014130m in spending cuts over the past five years, with another \u00c2\u014122m in cuts planned between 2017 and 2020. Nearby Middlesbrough was recently found to have the highest proportion of deprived neighbourhoods in the country.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And an analysis from the TUC<\/a> showed earlier this month what, exactly, these \u00e2\u20ac\u015bexciting new jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in the post-recession economy constitute \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a surge in low-paid self-employment, zero hours contracts, and low-wage jobs.<\/p>\n

Extremely difficult <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Experience shows that many steelworkers who lose their jobs in these circumstances find it extremely difficult to find suitable new work \u00e2\u20ac\u201c if any work at all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That the government has turned its back on the steel industry \u00e2\u20ac\u201c was the view of two steel workers who had previously lost their jobs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking on the BBC Radio 4\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Today<\/em> programme (October 26) Alan Davies was made redundant from his job at the Llanwern steel works in South Wales in 2001.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI was hoping to find work elsewhere,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbut I just couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get the money I was used to. I had to work nights in Asda just to make ends meet. It was not a nice place to be.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mike Cole understands. He was a crane driver at a steel works in Kent and both he and his son were made redundant in 2012.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no work in the Swale area,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nothing there. You apply for jobs, you get no replies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just very depressing.<\/p>\n

Cole, in his sixties, had worked in the industry for over 40 years. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m still applying for jobs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m getting very despondent. My son is also still applying \u00e2\u20ac\u201c he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s doing voluntary work at the moment.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Eventually Alan Davies did return to steel in 2006. His advice to those now facing job loss is to, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bGo to job fairs. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s your best chance of getting back into work.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For Mike Cole though job fairs have been of little help. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMy son went to a job fair recently. He could be either a beautician, a hairdresser or a masseur. They had no manual work.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Both workers are skilled \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but are those skills transferable? \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNo they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not compatible skills,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 believes Davies. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government really needs to do something to keep these skills and the industry safe. [The government] is wrong to turn its back [on the industry.] The government is not doing anything nearly enough.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEvery government in the world is subsidising steel works to keep people employed,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 adds Cole. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut our government has just turned their backs.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The MP for Redcar, Anna Turley, today called Heseltine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdisgusting\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s never a good time to lose your job,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd he further insults the dignity of highly skilled steel workers, many of whom have decades of experience and expertise.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Inappropriate comment<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey also railed against Heseltine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s words. \u00e2\u20ac\u0165What a disgraceful, inappropriate comment to make,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLord Heseltine has only ever known tremendous wealth and privilege his entire life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat on earth qualifies him to offer any job seeking advice, especially not to people faced with losing their jobs, who are terrified for their futures and who have had nothing other from his government but platitudes about retraining and start-ups?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is just more back to the 80s nonsense as today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Tories emulate Mrs Thatcher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s policy of leaving communities to fall into decline while the government watches on from the side-lines,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 McCluskey added.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese insensitive utterances from Lord Heseltine just confirm our worst fears – the Tories are not interested in offering any hope for our steel and manufacturing communities.<\/p>\n
