{"id":6579,"date":"2015-11-02T14:50:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T14:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6579"},"modified":"2015-11-03T10:37:51","modified_gmt":"2015-11-03T10:37:51","slug":"ideology-and-sheer-spite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6579","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Ideology and sheer spite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The trade union Bill is an attack on basic freedoms, public safety and will do lasting damage to industrial relations the TUC general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady has told a packed rally in London today (November 2).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She urged MPs to listen to the workers lobbying them today and vote the reject the measures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe trade union Bill is an affront to all fair-minded democrats and a fundamental attack on the right to strike\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she told the rally. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis Bill is both undemocratic and a threat to public safety,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBecause how can it be fair to fine unions up to \u00c2\u014120,000 if they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t give two weeks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 notice about what they are going to put on Twitter and Facebook during a strike? And how can it be safe to allow untrained agency workers to be used to break strikes?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ill-thought <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis ill-thought through legislation is, in the words of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own watchdog, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnot fit for purpose. Good employers agree that instead of picking a fight with six million workers ministers should be focused on building a stronger economy that delivers better jobs and wages for all.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Howard Beckett, Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Director of legal services agreed. He told UniteLive, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is no evidence that this legislation is needed. It is driven by ideology and elements of it by sheer spite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis government seems determined to treat workers as an industrial commodity, and remove the most basic of employment rights- the right to deny labour. This legislation isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a throwback to the Tory government of 1979 it is a throwback to Victorian times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is clearly left for the trade unions to remind this government that workers are not commodities to be used and discarded at will.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Howard Beckett said the legislation paves the way for a more aggressive role by the trade union certification officer who will be government appointed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the legislation there would be considerable additional powers for a Certification Officer to launch harassing attacks against unions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Says Howard, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Certification Officer will have the powers to accept complaints from anyone or initiate their own investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>No legal training <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe role will require no legal training and will be a government appointment.
