{"id":6589,"date":"2015-11-02T17:21:42","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T17:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6589"},"modified":"2015-11-02T17:21:42","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T17:21:42","slug":"a-win-win-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6589","title":{"rendered":"A &#8216;win-win decision&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite hailed Unilever UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s accreditation as a Living Wage employer today (November 2) as a victory for low paid workers on the road to better pay, but warned the move could be undermined if the government presses ahead with controversial cuts to tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite representing over 2,000 workers at Unilever, had been pressing the firm to become a living wage employer for over a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s announcement benefits around 500 indirectly employed and outsourced workers including security, canteen and cleaning staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It also commits Unilever to working with key suppliers to encourage a Living Wage approach and ensure regular contractors move to paying a living wage in the next 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Welcome move\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a welcome move by Unilever which will benefit low paid workers on the road to better pay,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 commented Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098win, win\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 decision which comes after a year-long campaign by Unite and follows on from our work with other employers such as Nestle UK to become living wage employers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe announcement by Unilever once again shows the vital role trade unions play in bringing fairness and justice to the workplace.
