{"id":6996,"date":"2015-12-01T16:57:57","date_gmt":"2015-12-01T16:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=6996"},"modified":"2015-12-01T16:57:57","modified_gmt":"2015-12-01T16:57:57","slug":"cloaked-in-silence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=6996","title":{"rendered":"Cloaked in silence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Northamptonshire luxury boat builders, Fairline Boats has not paid its pension contributions for the 468-strong workforce for three months, Unite claimed today (December 1), as the fate of the company remains cloaked in management silence and evasion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The future of the firm, since its recent takeover by private equity firm Wessex Bristol, has been plagued by about 185 lay-offs; a company refusal to talk to the local MP Tom Pursglove; and, it is claimed, the failure of the firm to make any pension contributions for the last three months, although money had been deducted from staff wages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Mick Orpin criticised what he called \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthis devil-take the hindmost attitude\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bis heralding a bleak Christmas for our members\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe workers, who have been laid off, have been abandoned &#8211; many have not been paid for ten weeks,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he explained. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey have now fallen behind with mortgage and rent payments and are looking at a grim Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe laid-off workers are now being forced to resign to claim redundancy payments, which the company has no intention of paying.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis means a claim will now have to be made through the national insurance fund and it will take months for our members to receive any payment,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Orpin added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need to emphasise that there is no support coming from the company for those displaced workers &#8211; basically, the management is behaving like Pontius Pilate and washing its hands of a long-standing dedicated workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd to add insult to injury, we have just found out that company has not been paying members pension contributions, even though it has deducted from their wages,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Orpin went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He noted that questions must be asked as to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwhy the current legislation can allow an employer to act in such a draconian way and treat its workforce in such a diabolical manner\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers are loyal employees and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t deserve this kind of treatment,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Orpin said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Compounding the situation, Oprin explained, was the fact that the local MP Tom Pursglove, who has raised the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s situation in the House of Commons, has been trying to meet with the company for the last six weeks, but management had snubbed his requests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe understand that there is very limited production, but we believe there are orders in the pipeline,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Orpin added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bLast week, we believe a handful of workers have been asked to return to work.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fairline Boats started production in 1963 and currently builds motor yachts at its original Oundle base, as well as in Corby.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northamptonshire luxury boat builders, Fairline Boats has not paid its pension contributions for the 468-strong workforce for three months, Unite claimed today (December 1), as the fate of the company remains cloaked in management silence and evasion. &nbsp;
