{"id":7008,"date":"2015-12-03T10:40:31","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T10:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=7008"},"modified":"2015-12-04T15:10:16","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T15:10:16","slug":"the-worlds-best-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=7008","title":{"rendered":"The world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Representatives for thousands of car workers at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are calling for an urgent meeting with Cyrus Mistry, the chairman of the carmaker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s parent company, to seek assurances over the future of the entire Tata UK workforce, Unite announced today (December 3).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nCalling for British made steel to be used in JLR vehicles, Unite representatives have written to the Tata Group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chairman expressing concern over Tata Steel UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future and Tata\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s commitment to steelmaking in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe letter comes against a backdrop of job cuts and closures in Tata Steel UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s speciality steel and long products division as fears mount over the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to sell its Scunthorpe plant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn their letter to Cyrus Mistry, Unite chair of JLR Bob Nason and Unite JLR Halewood convenor Ken Smith write, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have watched with increasing concern as the news unfolds that Tata Steel UK intends to dispose of its Scunthorpe plant by March 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese developments raise concerns for us about Tata\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans within the UK as whole, as well as the immediate concern for our colleagues in the steel industry who are now facing an uncertain future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs automotive workers we know that this industry still relies heavily on steel to manufacture components and vehicles in the UK.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWith JLR using British steel to make Range Rovers at Halewood and steel components in all its models, the convenors argued that the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best steel is produced by UK plants \u00e2\u20ac\u201c by Tata colleagues. They added that they are \u00e2\u20ac\u015bproud to use [UK steel] in a number of vehicles we produce\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTherefore we urge you to ensure that this relationship can endure,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the convenors continued. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are of the view that you should ensure that steel automotive components used by JLR in the UK and the vehicles we make using steel here should use British made steel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe appeal to you now to meet with us to discuss your future plans, and to provide assurances towards your intentions towards the entire Tata UK workforce.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnite national officer for steel and metals Harish Patel noted that the steel made by workers at Tata Steel UK is \u00e2\u20ac\u015bworld class\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhelps make some of the best cars in world.
