{"id":7358,"date":"2016-01-18T16:59:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T16:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=7358"},"modified":"2016-01-18T16:59:36","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T16:59:36","slug":"elderly-face-housing-axe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=7358","title":{"rendered":"Elderly face housing axe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A Gloucestershire district council has been urged to come clean about the future of its sheltered housing accommodation as the current uncertainty is causing \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a climate of fear\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for elderly residents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that proposals by Stroud district council to sell off six of its 29 sheltered housing sites affecting more than 250 residents, many over 70 years old, is causing unnecessary worry and concern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that the cash-strapped council had indicated that the sale of the sites would be for general, and not sheltered housing, and the union feared that this would be the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098thin end of the wedge\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, with the possibility of many more elderly residents being adversely affected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile there is no prospect of these elderly residents being thrown out on to the street, there is every chance that that they will be moved away from their family and friends \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and this should be strongly deplored,&#8221; said Unite community coordinator for the South West Brett Sparkes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe believe this is the thin end of the wedge, creating a climate of fear, coupled with the fact that the number of sheltered housing officers living on site has been cut back,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need the council to come clean on what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happening as the residents have been kept in the dark.
