{"id":7415,"date":"2016-01-22T16:45:06","date_gmt":"2016-01-22T16:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=7415"},"modified":"2016-01-22T16:45:06","modified_gmt":"2016-01-22T16:45:06","slug":"uniting-to-save-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=7415","title":{"rendered":"Uniting to save jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unite today announced (Friday January 22) it is joining forces with European counterparts in a bid to save former Alstom workers from redundancy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in the wake of the recent General Electric (GE) takeover. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Up to 600 workers could go at former Alstom sites in Bristol, Dartford, Stafford, Rugby and Newcastle after GE announced plans earlier in January to axe up to 6,500 jobs across Europe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meeting with their counterparts from other European unions at a European Works Council, Unite reps agreed to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098refuse all job redundancies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and \u00e2\u20ac\u0098contest all strategies that would have the direct consequence to lose jobs.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have major concerns that GE is cutting too far, too fast and leaving the newly merged company exposed to future skills shortages,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Zoe Mayou. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe workers facing redundancy are highly skilled with years of knowledge and expertise.
