{"id":7453,"date":"2016-01-27T14:01:39","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T14:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=7453"},"modified":"2016-01-27T17:07:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T17:07:38","slug":"cruel-and-disastrous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=7453","title":{"rendered":"Cruel and disastrous"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Tories plans to limit benefits to just \u00c2\u014120,000 (\u00c2\u014123,000 in London) a year could see vulnerable people lose their homes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Charities and housing associations yesterday (January 26) issued a warning to the government that those such as victims of domestic violence, veterans and dementia sufferers will be most at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe benefit cap is nasty,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite community coordinartor Liane Groves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt punishes the poor and the vulnerable for the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failure to tackle our housing crisis,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own figures revealed that almost two thirds of victims will be single mums.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once funding cuts come in to force it will hit sheltered housing, warned Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Aid and Mencap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They say 50,000 of the most vulnerable households, including domestic violence victims and dementia sufferers, will be hit by \u00c2\u014168 a week if the government includes them in the cap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a severe shortage of housing, especially affordable housing, which is only going to deteriorate further if the Tories go ahead and sell off our social housing stock,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Liane.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt the same time they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sitting back and letting landlords take advantage of vulnerable renters by allowing them to charge whatever they please,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners have called for vulnerable groups to be excluded from the cap. However Unite says the policy damages more than just the vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is an unfair and disastrous policy that takes families away from their support networks, rips children out of their schools, disrupts their studies and forces families away from areas of employment,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Liane.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Polly Neate, chief executive of Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Aid warned that with an estimated 12,000 women staying in refuge every year, more often than not, with their children, the policy puts them in grave danger.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uncertainty about the future of housing benefit payments is already directly impacting on services plans for the future and a risk to the future of refuge provision is a risk to women and children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lives,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Liane went on to warn that policies like this one prevent people from the opportunity to work their way back out of poverty too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMuch of the south of England is so badly affected there soon won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be places where people can actually move to,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is the Tories social cleansing of our cities.
