{"id":7980,"date":"2016-03-04T16:44:31","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T16:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=7980"},"modified":"2016-03-04T16:44:31","modified_gmt":"2016-03-04T16:44:31","slug":"concerns-over-workers-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=7980","title":{"rendered":"Concerns over workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite is raising concerns about\u00c2\u00a0the way global logistics giant DHL treats its workers in Latin America after a report found the company guilty of\u00c2\u00a0breaking its own \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and international \u00e2\u20ac\u201c rules.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union says that it has \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a healthy relationship\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 with the DHL management in the UK, but wishes to show solidarity with employees in other countries where the alleged abuses of the workforce have taken place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has about 16,000 members working for DHL in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The independent investigation \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breaking-the-code.org\">www.breaking-the-code.org<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c carried out in Chile, Colombia and Panama, exposes serious abuses and failings in the way the German-based multinational behaves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Line in the sand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for logistics, Matt Draper, said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are drawing a line in the sand about\u00c2\u00a0 what is allegedly happening to DHL staff in Central and Latin America to underline that this sort of behaviour has no place in the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile we have a healthy and good working relationship with DHL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s management in the UK. Unite, as the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest union, wants to show strong solidarity with our comrades in the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be raising the research with the DHL management in UK so they can feed it back our serious concerns to the senior echelons of the company in Germany to ensure that these abuses are stamped out as a matter of priority.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s concerns follows similar findings in previous research carried out at DHL sites in India (<a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/KCRCiS\">http:\/\/goo.gl\/KCRCiS<\/a>) and Turkey (<a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/zE6FV5\">http:\/\/goo.gl\/zE6FV5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (Friday 4 March) shock report is released as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) talks between DHL and the global unions came to an end.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breaches international standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Steve Cotton, general secretary of The International Transport Workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Federation (ITF), said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese talks have failed to improve conditions for DHL workers. While we were negotiating in good faith, DHL was continuing to treat its workers in a way that breaches international standards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time for DHL to engage in a robust, transparent process in consultation with staff and their unions to improve working conditions at the company and ensure freedom of association for all of its workers worldwide.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report includes the story of a worker who sustained chronic injuries due to poor training, the case of 42 workers sacked for union activity, evidence of DHL faking a customer letter to fire the son of a union official, claims that DHL monitors employees conversations and evidence that DHL intercepts union members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 phone calls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s author, Dr Victor Figueroa Clark of the London School of Economics, said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s code should make DHL a beacon of good conduct in Latin America. Sadly, the evidence from the workers I interviewed for my report paints an overwhelmingly different picture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-union practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe multiple, frequent and institutional anti-union practices described in this report are difficult to interpret as anything but the result of an anti-union policy originating from the heart of the company in Germany.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 the OECD accepted a complaint by the ITF and UNI Global Union about Deutsche Post-DHL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conduct after previous investigations (see <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/DZi526\">http:\/\/goo.gl\/DZi526<\/a>). This led to two years of talks that concluded in December and were finally reviewed today, and have failed to improve conditions for DHL workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is part of the ITF\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s global campaign to raise standards for all DHL workers.
