Unite has described Sadiq Khan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manifesto setting out his London Mayoral bid as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bprogramme of fairness\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 which will be welcomed by millions in the capital.<\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s candidate has put affordable housing and tackling inequality at the heart of his proposals \u00e2\u20ac\u201c pledging to build thousands more homes each year, plus a better deal for renters.<\/p>\n

Launching A Manifesto for all Londoners<\/em> the Tooting MP said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bToo many are being priced out of our city. This election is a referendum on the Tory housing crisis.<\/p>\n

Distant dream <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor young families, even those on good incomes, home ownership is increasingly a distant dream. Those Londoners need a Mayor with the ambition and ability to deliver a massive step-change in home building.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Introducing the manifesto Khan writes, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need to build\u00c2\u00a0more homes, including more\u00c2\u00a0genuinely affordable homes for\u00c2\u00a0Londoners, and fewer gold bricks for\u00c2\u00a0overseas investors.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

He also plans to introduce an online database of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098rogue\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 landlords to help renters in the capital and work with councils, housing associations and residents groups to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbreak the homebuilding logjam.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

On education and training Khan \u00e2\u20ac\u201c whose main rival is the Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is pledging a new skills for Londoners taskforce to identify gaps in provision.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are also promises to tackle the blight of low pay and engage employers to make London a Living Wage City, a place \u00e2\u20ac\u0098in which all workers are paid fairly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Similarly Khan has made it clear he is determined to end inequality on gender pay and make hate crime a priority for police.<\/p>\n

Fares freeze <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Another key plank is the idea of freezing fares on public transport for four years, added to a one-hour \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Hopper\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 ticket \u00e2\u20ac\u201c all of which would mean Londoners have \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a modern and affordable transport network\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pay a penny more to travel in their city in 2020 than they do today.<\/p>\n

Peter Kavanagh, Unite regional secretary for London said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmillions of ordinary Londoners will heartily welcome the things that Sadiq has set out in his manifesto, especially on housing.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHis is a programme of fairness and progress; on public transport fares, low pay, gender inequality, and enhancing skills and training.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAll of this stands in stark contrast to the negative and divisive campaign offered by Zac Goldsmith, a candidate lacking vision, values and experience.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

The Labour hopeful currently remains the front-runner for the May election, with the bookies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and latest polls putting him as much as ten points ahead of Goldsmith.<\/p>\n
