{"id":8096,"date":"2016-03-11T12:59:18","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T12:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=8096"},"modified":"2016-03-11T12:59:18","modified_gmt":"2016-03-11T12:59:18","slug":"a-fishy-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=8096","title":{"rendered":"A &#8216;fishy&#8217; business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading supplier of chilled fish has been accused of paying for the new \u00e2\u20ac\u0098national living wage\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by slashing overtime rates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite believes Grimsby-based firm \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Icelandic Seachill \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is engaged in \u00e2\u20ac\u0098an outrageous sleight of hand\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to recoup money it will have to pay out for the 46 pence per hour increase required by the national living wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Icelandic Seachill relies on large amounts of overtime from its 400 workforce at the Great Grimsby Business Park.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Dave Monaghan said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members are extremely angry at this jiggery-pokery and call on the management to put an end to this bad idea regarding the overtime rates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWithout the enormous amount of overtime that our members put in this profitable company would not be able to generate tens of millions in sales a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow the management is using this outrageous sleight of hand to reduce the living standards of our members who rely greatly on overtime to boost their already low wages.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is concerned that this practice will become widespread across the UK when companies become legally obliged to pay the national living wage of \u00c2\u01417.20 per hour from April 1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Those fears are backed up by a report by recruitment giant, Manpower which warns that employers are preparing to cut overtime and rates paid for weekend working to claw back the extra cost of the new national living wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Industrial action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monaghan added \u00e2\u20ac\u015bour members are signing a petition in protest making it clear they will not accept the imposition of reduced overtime rates. The prospect of an industrial action ballot would be highly likely.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bosses at the Laforey Road plant intend to pay the 400 process operators \u00c2\u01417.35 per hour. The normal week is 40 hours, but the workers are required to work every other weekend on overtime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, a week can easily average between 50 and 60 hours i.e. 10-20 hours of overtime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, the company intends to slash overtime rates.
