{"id":9161,"date":"2016-07-01T16:23:16","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T15:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9161"},"modified":"2016-07-01T16:23:16","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T15:23:16","slug":"solid-support-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9161","title":{"rendered":"Solid support"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>There was solid support on the final day of a 48-hour strike at Chester glass manufacturers Encirc Glass today (July 1), as messages of support flooded in from workers at some of the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s customers, including Heineken, InBev and Diageo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over 300 members of Unite have been on strike at the Chester-based glass firm since 06:45am yesterday (June 30) in the dispute over pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Branding attempts by Encirc to undermine the lawful action by threating and insulting staff as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098shameful\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, the union urged the firm to see sense and enter into further meaningful negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Workers at the company have rejected a two-year pay deal based on a two per cent pay rise in year one and a conversion of bonus pay into basic pay in year two. This means there would be no basic pay award for year two, with pay rises instead determined through a divisive bonus scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere has been solid support for the strike, despite reports of some at the company shamefully trying to threaten and insult staff,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165\u00c2\u00a0 said Unite regional officer Alison Spencer-Scragg. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite will not tolerate its members being treated in such a way and has reported the firm to the conciliation service Acas and enlisted the help of the local MP, Justin Madders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite has also contacted the Health and Safety Executive over health and safety breaches which may have occurred because of the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions during the strike,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith support flooding in from workers at Encirc\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest customers, we would urge the firm to drop its belligerent stance and reopen negotiations on the pay award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers are concerned at the way bonus payments are being used to prop up low salaries,&#8221; Spencer-Scragg went on to say. &#8220;Historically, this has been an issue for staff at the site resulting in overwhelming dissatisfaction throughout the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe would urge senior management to sit down with Unite to negotiate a settlement that meets our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 concerns.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Encirc glass workers in Ireland were among the workers expressing solidarity with their colleagues taking strike action in Chester.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur membership in Encirc Glass based in Fermanagh and Cavan are keen to express their solidarity for the striking workers in Chester,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Sam Smyth. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite will be establishing a solidarity fund for donations to support those workers on strike.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe urge management to see sense and adopt a conciliatory approach to resolving this dispute,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey must sit down with Unite representatives and negotiate a settlement that meets our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 concerns.
