{"id":9238,"date":"2016-07-12T09:15:27","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T08:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9238"},"modified":"2016-07-12T17:26:24","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:26:24","slug":"making-a-difference-to-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9238","title":{"rendered":"Making a difference to workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fourth ever Policy Conference began yesterday (July 11) in Brighton, with Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s executive committee chair, Tony Woodhouse, giving opening remarks in which he laid out Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mission \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to protect and improve pay and conditions for working people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">This aim was at no time more important than now, he argued, following the recent vote in favour of the UK leaving the European Union.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">He recalled how Unite had decided democratically at the last policy conference in 2014 to support remaining in the European Union, a decision in which members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 views were front and centre.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut we recognised we cannot be uncritical of the European Union,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">Woodhouse noted that no matter the outcome of the EU referendum, Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s core aim has and will remain the same \u00e2\u20ac\u201c protecting members. He pointed specifically to the steel industry, in which, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe jobs of our steel members and the future of those communities remain uncertain and precarious.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">He emphasised the fact that Unite will continue to do \u00e2\u20ac\u015beverything we can to defend the industry and steelworkers.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">Woodhouse paid tribute to the Miami Five, who were finally freed after decades of imprisonment, thanks to the tireless campaigning of Unite and other organisations.
