Uniting behind Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Unite delegates voted in favour of a motion today (July 14) to call on Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) to urge their MPs to support the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s democratically elected leader.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The motion urged all concerned to re-double their efforts to ensure Jeremy Corbyn is elected next prime minister of the UK.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite delegate George Hickman of the West Midlands region put forward the motion, arguing that trade unionists \u00e2\u20ac\u015bneed someone in government who shares our values.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leadership, he contended, represents a unique opportunity to rally around a party that, for the first time in a long time, explicitly and wholeheartedly supports trade unions and their ideals, as well as a programme of unreserved anti-austerity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite delegate Stewart Dack<\/strong> of the South East supported the motion, highlighting that membership in his CLP has trebled since the last general election.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJeremy reflects the views of the Labour party membership,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNot only does he not condemn strikes he joins picket lines.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCLPs need to look at their MPs \u00e2\u20ac\u201d does our MP represent the view of our members?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Dack asked conference. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the answer is no we should do something about it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite South East delegate Phil Rudd<\/strong> gave voice to those who may have reservations about Jeremy Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leadership, and urged conference to reject the motion.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhen someone comes along [like Jeremy] and shares our values it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s understandable that he would be popular in the union movement,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But he believed some members were not confident the Labour party could win general elections under Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leadership.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is not an attack on Jeremy Corbyn \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s simply pragmatism over idealism.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite delegate Darran Brown<\/strong> (pictured) told conference that, although he left the Labour party a long time ago, inspired by Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s speeches at policy conference this week, he would re-join the party from today.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Labour party is the only movement for the working class,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he argued. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhy are we here, why do we bother being trade unionists\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 if, he noted, we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t support a leader who shares union values?<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s get the anti-trade union act rescinded,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bLet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s back Corbyn all the way.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

The motion was carried by a large majority, confirming Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s solid support for a united Labour party under the leadership of its democratically elected leader Jeremy Corbyn.<\/p>\n
