{"id":9617,"date":"2016-08-24T16:46:38","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T15:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9617"},"modified":"2016-08-25T15:31:29","modified_gmt":"2016-08-25T14:31:29","slug":"landlords-raking-in-the-rent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9617","title":{"rendered":"Landlords: Raking in the rent"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Private landlords pocketed \u00c2\u01419.3bn in housing benefit last year, a shocking new report has revealed \u00e2\u20ac\u201c double the amount claimed 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.housing.org.uk\/resource-library\/browse\/the-growing-housing-benefit-spend-in-the-private-rented-sector\/\">Analysis by the National Housing Federation<\/a> (NHF), which represents housing associations, found that housing benefit payments to landlords had rocketed from \u00c2\u01414.6bn in 2006 to \u00c2\u01419.3bn in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NHF said private renters receiving housing benefit has increased by 42 per cent since 2008, with the rising taxpayer costs compounded by much higher rents in the private housing sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If Britain&#8217;s private renters had been living in social housing during that period the taxpayer would have saved a total \u00c2\u014115.6bn, the report stated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Madness\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NHF chief executive David Orr said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is madness to spend \u00c2\u01419bn of taxpayers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 money lining the pockets of private landlords, rather than investing in affordable homes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHousing associations want to build the homes nation needs. By loosening restrictions on existing funding, the government can free up housing associations to build more affordable housing at better value to the taxpayer and directly address the housing crisis.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Social housing rents are an average of \u00c2\u014121 a week cheaper than private rents, the NHF pointed out, with social housing costing a family \u00c2\u014189 per week compared \u00c2\u0141110 in the private sector \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a difference of around \u00c2\u01411,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In London the difference is even starker at \u00c2\u014164 per week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c meaning private sector tenants pay \u00c2\u01413,300 more each year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report found that housing benefit is increasingly being claimed by working families \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 47 per cent of all housing benefit claimants in the private sector are now in work, compared to just 26 per cent in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Lower standard <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though private renters pay more for accommodation, their housing is of a lower standard than that in the not for profit sector, the NHF said, with one in three private sector homes failing to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/539561\/Private_Rented_Sector_Full_Report.pdf\">English Housing Survey<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decent homes standard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A government spokesperson denied that housing benefit payments to private landlords was increasing and said the costs were being brought under control.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the government was failing to take necessary steps to rectify the root causes of the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s housing crisis and its <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/ballooning-bill-workers-housing-benefit\/\">cost to the taxpayer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMillions of working people are struggling on poverty pay and left open to continued insecurity and abuse by landlords claiming billions in corporate welfare subsidies from taxpayers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis will remain the case unless and until housing becomes more affordable, and we embark on the massive council house building programme the country is crying out for.
