{"id":9628,"date":"2016-08-25T16:48:25","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T15:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9628"},"modified":"2016-08-26T12:02:29","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T11:02:29","slug":"sports-direct-a-rare-feat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9628","title":{"rendered":"Sports Direct: A \u00e2\u20ac\u0098rare feat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>An investment group worth \u00c2\u014114.5 trillion has taken the unusual step of joining Unite and MPs in calling for an independent review and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfundamental reform\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 at rogue employer Sports Direct.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner described the circumstances as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015brare feat,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 while urging the company to move away from exploitative zero-hour agency contracts and employ people directly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSports Direct has achieved a rare feat in uniting the City, politicians and Unite in the need to address deep seated problems with its work practices and corporate governance.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Investor Forum group, which represents 27 per cent of Sports Direct shareholders, including Standard Life, Aviva, Legal &amp; General and Fidelity, <a href=\"http:\/\/media.wix.com\/ugd\/1cf1e4_92f4632de08048fd8f551d92adc5158b.pdf\">criticised corporate failings<\/a> at the beleaguered retail chain and rubbished an in-house employment abuses investigation set up by majority owner Mike Ashley.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Highly unusual\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Investor Forum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s executive director Andy Griffiths said it was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhighly unusual\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for the group to publicly criticise a company but they have not \u00e2\u20ac\u015breceived an appropriate level of commitment to respond to investor concerns and, as a result, the usual options have been exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe remain committed to engaging with the Board constructively to enhance the value of Sports Direct\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s franchise but this requires the company to reconsider its proposed actions and acknowledge the need for fundamental reform,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Griffiths said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf they are unable to do so, then members of the Board will have to ask themselves whether they are able to effectively represent the interests of all shareholders.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Investor Forum said a review carried out by the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own lawyers into employment practises and a proposed external board evaluation, were neither independent nor comprehensive enough \u00e2\u20ac\u015bto reflect the breadth and magnitude of reform that is required.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they called on Ashley to implement a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwide-reaching independent review of the entire governance practises,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as recommended by a department of business (BiS) select committee.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ashley was <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/cant-be-responsible-for-everything\/\">forced to appear<\/a> before the committee in June after a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/campaigning\/support-sports-direct-workers---sign-our-petition\/\">Unite campaign<\/a> and undercover investigation by the Guardian exposed \u00e2\u20ac\u015bVictorian\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 work practises at the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Shirebrook warehouse, including employees being mistreated and paid less than the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of warehouse workers are now <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/unite-pay-justice-result\/\">due back pay<\/a> totalling around \u00c2\u01411m, while the company and its employment agencies are facing fines of up to \u00c2\u01412m, after Mike Ashley admitted breaking the law during the BiS committee hearing.
