{"id":9718,"date":"2016-09-08T11:52:48","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T10:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9718"},"modified":"2016-09-08T11:52:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T10:52:48","slug":"victory-against-insecure-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9718","title":{"rendered":"Victory against insecure jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A victory against the insecurity of agency working has been won on behalf of 42 escorts on Hackney school buses who now have permanent jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite took up the cudgels for the escorts, all of whom were employed via an agency \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and many had been employed on that basis for over 10 years; with some for up to 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The escorts employed by Hackney Learning Trust, part of the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s education department, are now on permanent 20 hours per week term time only contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Result<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInsecure work is one of the curses that plagues the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s employment landscape in 2016 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c whether it is zero hours contracts and\/or employment through an agency,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite regional officer Onay Kasab.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is delighted to have won this battle on behalf of the escorts who were employed on agency contracts, some for up to 16 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe victory is given extra piquancy by the fact that the escorts are nearly all women and the majority are from an ethnic minority background,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe launched a campaign to win permanent jobs for all the escorts. The law is not particularly helpful in this area as the length of service as an agency member of staff does not give you permanent status with the organisation that engages you, in this case, Hackney Learning Trust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe had to construct an industrial campaign, but we already had the previous victory to build on so the employer knew that we would be prepared to take action. We are also engaged with other campaigns in Hackney involving school cleaners and parking wardens \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is clear that Unite means business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe employer agreed to offer permanent jobs without the union having to take strike action \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but we had made sure that everybody was clear that should we have had to, we would,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kasab went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe result is that everybody who applied for a permanent job was successful.
