{"id":9735,"date":"2016-09-09T16:19:37","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T15:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9735"},"modified":"2016-09-09T16:19:37","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T15:19:37","slug":"a-big-big-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9735","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098A big, big victory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite secured a massive victory in its fight against Bromley council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s privatisation agenda, after its campaign forced a main plank of the local authority\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals to fall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bromley has planned to privatise 14 libraries, and replace all paid, professional staff at eight libraries with volunteers, but now thanks to Unite, the threat of volunteer only-run services has been quelled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a concerted campaign working with the local community to leaflet, lobby and organise a march, Community Links Bromley, the volunteer organisation tasked with replacing paid staff at the six libraries, has now pulled out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Onay Kasab noted that this effectively means \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe proposal for volunteers is dead.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a big, big victory,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bReplacing paid staff with volunteers doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work \u00e2\u20ac\u201c if the proposal went through, it would be only a matter of time before those libraries would shut down,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kasab explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-35707956\">recent BBC investigation<\/a> has shown that libraries are closing at an unprecedented rate as more and more of them rely on volunteers to run services after thousands of professional, paid staff have been shed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To put a stop in Bromley to what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happening in councils across the UK, Unite identified Community Links Bromley (CLB) as the organisation that would staff the eight libraries with volunteers, and then relentlessly piled on the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Leafletted <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe leafletted outside their building whenever they had any events,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kasab noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir building is also used by other organisations and we leafletted them as well to raise awareness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe also contacted Community Links Bromley itself several times, in which we explained to them the impact replacing paid staff with volunteers would have on library services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe organisation is a non-profit charity which claims to have community values at its heart \u00e2\u20ac\u201c we reminded them of this and highlighted the role they would be playing in destroying the community\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt first they tried to blame the council, saying that there was nothing they could do,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Kasab added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut we pointed out that they very much had a hand in making sure the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals went through. If they dropped out, the plan to run volunteer-only outfits would be done for.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Together with a well-attended march organised by Unite and embraced by the local community, CLB finally relented and pulled out on Tuesday (September 6).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now all Bromley libraries will go through a normal tendering process, a move that Unite will vigorously fight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe importance of this news in our wider fight against privatisation in Bromley cannot be overstated,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he explained. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow we can fight the standard tendering model for all the libraries without our members being split. Winning the volunteer campaign has meant that our members and the community are now even more galvanised to take on the council and fight their proposals.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next step, Kasab noted, is finding out which companies are bidding in the tendering process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt the moment, they are hiding behind so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098commercial confidentiality\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 agreements, something which we will fight.
