Congress today (September 13) stood united against the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pernicious Trade Union Act, which threatens the most fundamental rights of working people.<\/p>\n

On the third day of the TUC conference, speaking in support of a composite which was overwhelmingly carried, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke argued that now was the perfect moment in time to go beyond merely fighting anti-trade union legislation that includes the Act but also stretches back more than three decades.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith a change of direction in the Labour party, we now have the opportunity to move beyond repeal and draw up a new framework of trade union rights and freedoms for workers and our unions,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Outlining what a new framework might look like, Burke called for new organising rights which do not exempt small companies and which protect workers from US-style \u00e2\u20ac\u0098union busters\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

He also called for a return to collective bargaining at the sectoral level by enshrining collective bargaining rights into law for all workers irrespective of their employment status.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe loss of these bargaining rights has seen a major decline in workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 wages in the past three decades,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Burke noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe share of national income going to salaries and wages has fallen from 65 per cent in 1980 to 53 per cent in recent times.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Burke also called for an end to bogus self-employment which undermine wages and conditions.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, Burke argued that the right to strike must be \u00e2\u20ac\u0098unequivocal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have lost count of the number of times our unions have been served with injunctions to stop strike and dispute action, sometimes for the most trivial reasons,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYou know the old story \u00e2\u20ac\u201c wake up a High Court judge, give him a brandy, show him a headline from the Sun – and the injunction is granted.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Urging Congress to stand up for positive trade union rights, he said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWithout an unambiguous right to strike, collective bargaining is reduced to collective begging.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
