{"id":9977,"date":"2016-09-26T11:45:36","date_gmt":"2016-09-26T10:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=9977"},"modified":"2016-09-26T14:50:19","modified_gmt":"2016-09-26T13:50:19","slug":"fundamental-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=9977","title":{"rendered":"Fundamental right"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Laura Pidcock, a Unite delegate from Blyth Valley, today (Monday 26 September) addressed the National Policy Forum report on housing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bConference, every single person should have a home as a fundamental right,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A right that has been left too much in the hands of the private market.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a market that has been relaxed leaving people in insecure tenancies and squalid conditions. Twenty first century slum landlords have been allowed to ignore tenant\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pleas to remove mould and damp,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Laura.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The housing crisis has escalated under the Tories with the hope of ever being able to own a home snatched away from so many now left at the hands of rip-off landlords.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey pack as many people as possible into properties to make sure their profits are large,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Laura.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGood quality housing for our communities should be a right. Not a commodity bought and sold in the international monopoly game of property portfolios,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a movement we must stand firm in repeating that immigrants are not to blame for the housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the Syrian refugee who prevents people from having a house. It is a government that does not care and has failed,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Laura.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the mass sell-off of council housing stock under Thatcher there has been decades of councils not building council homes. This has led to a critical shortage and because of government cuts the housing stock that we do have, we are not able to maintain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis government does not care about people who live in council homes,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Laura.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFences not fixed, tenants waiting months for basic repairs to be done.
