Car production races to 17-year high

The 17-year high in UK car production reinforces the case for safeguards for the automotive sector in any Brexit deal, Unite said today (Thursday December 22).

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMTT) said today that 1.6m cars rolled off UK production lines in first 11 months of this year, as global demand reaches a new high.

The SMTT said that UK car manufacturing output reached its highest level since 1999.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said, “What these fantastic figures demonstrate is that it is vital the Brexit deal negotiated by the government strengthens this key manufacturing sector which provides skilled work for tens of thousands of men and women across the country.

“This 17-year high in car production is another sign of the massive contribution that the hard work of Unite members makes in delivering this record-breaking success.

“Our automotive industry is world class, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of our members.

“Once again these record production figures show the resilience of the UK’s automotive sector, and the benefit of good relationships between the car companies and Unite.

“And with more new models coming on stream over the next few years, these figures are a huge vote of confidence in UK automotive companies and the thousands working in the supply chain.

“The UK car industry is truly experiencing a renaissance which is reflected into today’s announcement.
