Burton bus deal good news

Bus drivers working for Midland Classic at the Burton on Trent bus garage can look forward to a strong collective voice at work, Unite announced today (February 3), after it signed a recognition agreement with the bus operator.

The agreement covering 85 drivers at the former Arriva garage in the town means the drivers can now bargain collectively on pay, and terms and conditions, as well as draw on the skills and expertise of the country’s biggest union for bus workers.

The recognition agreement, which is the first of its kind between Unite and Midland Classic, is also good news for passengers. Over the coming weeks and months, Unite will be seeking to work with the company to drive up standards and improve health and safety through training and support for drivers.

“Bus drivers operating out of the Burton on Trent bus garage deliver a vital service for passengers in Staffordshire and Derbyshire,” said Unite regional officer Rick Coyle.

“At this time of economic uncertainty, this agreement will not only give them the extra security and better conditions that collective bargaining brings, but help drive up standards for the travelling public.

“We look forward to working positively with Midland Classic to improve the working lives of our members and the service they provide to the public.”
