‘Shocking’ failings

Unite to prepare legal action against Bromley
Ciaran Naidoo, Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

Unite has instructed its lawyers to investigate and look into legal actions against Bromley council and individual Bromley councillors for failings in their statutory duties to protect the people of Bromley.

Bromley residents and Unite have compiled evidence – including some ‘shocking’ examples of mistreatment – from a confidential hotline set up for residents to report council failings and the impact of cuts on local services. Last week Bromley council took the decision to increase council tax. Residents in the average Bromley property are about to see their council tax rise by nearly ÂŁ50.

Unite is now in the process of preparing a number of actions, including with statutory bodies, on behalf of named Bromley residents against the councillors and against the council. Evidence has been compiled in the following areas:

·         failing children and young people

·         failing the old and the vulnerable

·         failing Bromley residents with housing

·         and other local failures impacting services for Bromley residents

“Bromley residents and Unite have compiled a shocking dossier which exposes mistreatment and failures by Bromley council,” said Unite acting general secretary Gail Cartmail. “There is potential evidence that individual councillors and the council collectively have been failing in their public duties to protect the people of Bromley. Unite is making its considerable resources available to the people of Bromley.”

“Residents in the average Bromley property are about to see their council tax rise by nearly £50. Some of the reports we have seen are alarming. Bromley deserves a lot better and Unite intends to hold the council to account.”
