In a debate on pay, public sector and living standards, Unite delegate and Bromley council worker Kathy Smith told conference of the inequalities that are rife in public sector pay.

Kathy spoke of a teaching assistant she represented who in working with a child with cerebral palsy, acted as a nurse, a physiotherapist and a behavioral therapist all wrapped in one.

She said, “The chief executive of Bromley council earns over £200k a year, while the Unite member earns £12k. Why can’t she have a pay rise?

Kathy said industrial action was needed to increase people’s salaries but so also was the full cooperation of the Labour party.

“I want an equal partnership with Labour,” Kathy said. “I never want to see Ed Miliband saying public sector workers should not be on strike. I want to see every Labour elected member working with us.”
