Pushed into poverty
Speaking passionately about the cost of living crisis that is pushing the country’s working class into poverty, Unite delegate Liz McInnes warned conference that the government’s austerity regime is “driving down the living standards of ordinary people.”
The debate questioned the supposed economic recovery, arguing this has yet to reach the vast majority of people who are struggling to survive in Tory Britain.
“The slow improvement in headline GDP is a product of more people working longer hours for less pay,” Liz said.
“Our public services are being hacked back and our social security system dismantled. Poverty is growing and insecure work increases as trade unions are attacked and employment rights eroded.
“It is not simply that we have been unlucky to experience all of these calamities at once – they are a direct result of the policies purses by this Tory-led government.”
Speakers were ardent in their disgust with the regime that has engulfed so many working families into poverty and voted unanimously to carry the cost of living crisis composite.
