Victory against discrimination
Unite, which represents bus drivers, is celebrating victory after London bus company Metroline, bowed to union pressure and reversed its decision to bar its driver Marcia Carty from wearing a hair wrap which contained Rastafarian colours.
Yesterday (September 24) Unite announced it was in the process of launching a major campaign against the religious and racial discrimination that Marcia Carty was facing.
In response Metroline re-examined the case and altered its stance and decided that Marcia Carty would be allowed to work and drive her bus while wearing the hair wrap with the Rastafarian colours of green, gold and red on it.
“Unite is very pleased that Metroline’s management has recognised that its policy was wrong and that it has now swiftly moved to resolve the situation,” said Unite regional officer Russ Ball.
“Unite will now hold negotiations with Metroline to resolve the other outstanding matters in the case and ensure that there are no similar problems in the future.”
