Unite speaks your language

Workers who speak English as a second language will be able to access help and information on Unite the union’s website in their own language thanks to a new accessibility tool, which also boosts access to the site for people with dyslexia and mild visual impairments.

In what is thought to be a first for the trade union movement, the desktop and smartphone websites of Unite now has support software called Browsealoud which adds speech, reading and translation capabilities.

To use the support software, visitors to the Unite website just need to click on the orange and black icon at the bottom right of a web page and select the relevant support tool.

The launch of the tool comes during #Heartunions week, in which Unite is celebrating the amazing work our members, reps and activists do every day in workplaces and communities up and down the country.

Commenting Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said, “Unite is an open, inclusive union with members from every walk of life. I am proud that as part of our digitisation programme we have boosted our website’s accessibility, making it easier for migrant workers and people with dyslexia or mild visual impairments to access help and support from their union online.”
