#IWD live from Scotland
Unite Scotland today held an event on International Women’s Day (March 8) to encourage women to try welding as a vocation at the West College Scotland. The event was held in Clydebank, which was the heart of Scotland’s shipbuilding heritage but with the twist of taking a traditionally male dominated industry and turning it on its head.
The event was a one day taster session to let women try metal inert gas (MIG) welding in a safe environment. Unite will be offering potential vocational qualifications to those who are interested in furthering the course into a potential career.
“Feedback from the participants will give us an idea of how we can encourage more women to take up predominantly male-dominated roles,” explained Unite learning organiser Janet Dunbar.
