Blackpool Airport to close
Blackpool Airport Limited, owners of Blackpool airport have announced that it is to close on Wednesday October 15.
Over 100 staff at the airport, including fire fighters, security, air traffic controllers and administration staff, are all set to lose their jobs.
“The loss of 120 jobs in Blackpool will have a huge impact on local communities,” said Dave Kennedy, Unite regional officer.
“It is a major blow to the town, which is already struggling with high unemployment and a shortage of skilled or well-paid jobs.”
The regional airport for Lancashire and the Lake District was only put up for sale in August. Since then Blackpool has been trying to find a buyer.
“We are shocked and very disappointed,” added Dave Kennedy.
“We can’t believe Blackpool Airport’s hasty decision to shut the airport next week. We urge Blackpool Airport bosses to seriously rethink the planned closure.”
Three airlines – Jet2, Stobart Air and Citywing – currently fly from Blackpool Airport.
