Unite praises London Mayor’s ‘Good Work Standard’ as excellent first step

Unite has today (July 29) welcomed the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s new ‘Good Work Standard’ as an excellent first step on the road to making work better for millions of Londoners.

 

Unite is urging employers to get behind the scheme and join Unite in making fair pay and better working conditions the new standard practice for a happier, more productive workforce.

 

The scheme, which was launched in London today (Monday 29 July), sets a high bar for employment standards, provides resources as well as support for good employers.

 

Commenting at the launch today, Unite regional secretary for London and Eastern, Pete Kavanagh said, “Unite is proud to support the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s ‘Good Work Standard’. This is an excellent first step on the road to improving the working lives of Londoners.

 

“Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity,” he added. “The fight for fairly paid, safe, secure jobs is at the heart of what we do as a trade union. We need to be fighting not just for good jobs, but great jobs.

 

“We look forward to working with employers and are urging businesses, in particular the hospitality sector, where around 70 per cent of workers are still not paid the London Living Wage of ÂŁ10.55 an hour, to get behind the scheme.

 

“Together we can help make London the best city in the world to work.”
