‘Let’s celebrate what we have in common’

Unite is set to celebrate Black History Month in October with a series of events organised by the union’s regions.

Each year, October marks Black History Month, when the UK celebrates and promotes the vital contributions black and Asian minority ethnic (BAME) people have made to British society for hundreds of years.

From Windrush immigrants who played a vital part in rebuilding the country after the Second World War, to the many thousands of BAME people who are an indispensable part of our cherished public services such as the NHS, to music, politics, education and more, Black History Month shines a spotlight on the fact that there is no corner of British public life that hasn’t been enriched by BAME communities.

Black History Month also highlights the horrific racism BAME people have faced over the years in a fight for equality that continues to this day.

At Unite’s central office, the union will be celebrating with a special event on October 3 highlighting the history of black miners. The event will be followed by a lunch featuring a sampling of African, Caribbean and Asian dishes.

Unite national officer for equalities Harish Patel explained why Black History Month is so important to our union.

“Throughout history, black and Asian workers have faced racism in this country,” he said. “Together with friends in the trade union and labour movement we confronted fascist ideologies and won. No return to those dark days.”

“Let us celebrate what we have in common and respect our differences. We reject racism and hatred and campaign against hatred and division. With our collective strength we continue to organise in workplaces and communities to ensure our four principles – unity, equality, trade union rights and solidarity.”
