Harry makes a stand
Pictured is Harry Leslie Smith as he commemorated Armistice Day on November 11 at the Memorial Hospital, Holmfirth, Yorkshire. The 91-year old anti-austerity campaigner and author has taken the Labour movement by storm with his autobiography Harry’s last stand and his speeches at Labour Party conference and the recent TUC Give Britain a pay rise.
Originally from Yorkshire, war veteran Harry served in the RAF. However since last year Harry has refused to wear a poppy.
He says, “I will no longer allow my obligation as a veteran to remember those who died in the great wars to be co-opted by current or former politicians to justify our folly in Iraq, our morally dubious war on terror and our elimination of one’s right to privacy.”
