NI NHS staff: pay us properly

Understaffing and underfunding main barriers to seven day NHS
Donal O'Cofaigh, Friday, July 17th, 2015

Understaffing and underfunding are the main barriers to a seven-day NHS in Northern Ireland, Unite said today (Friday July 17) – and not staff costs for working unsocial hours.

The reality is that Northern Ireland healthcare professionals are leaving the NHS in their droves over pay stagnation and mounting working pressures.

And it’s the only part of the UK where workers have not received a recommended one per cent pay increase.

Unite national officer, Kevin McAdam, responded to minister for health, Simon Hamilton’s comments by welcoming the prospect of a seven-day NHS in Northern Ireland.

“Despite the pressures that have been exerted on it by UK cabinet ministers, the NHS Pay Review Body has produced a report which quashes claims that the main barrier to a seven-day-a-week NHS is the costs being exacted for unsocial hours,” McAdam said.

Understaffing

“We believe the main obstacles are underfunding, understaffing and a lack of staff involvement. The first two issues are reflective of austerity policies which have reduced health funding and led to wage

stagnation.”

NHS professionals in Northern Ireland are the only ones in the UK still waiting for a one per cent increase recommended by the independent pay body for the 2014/15 tax year.

This has led to a situation where health care workers here have seen their incomes decline by 15 per cent in real terms since 2010.

“There is huge loyalty to the NHS but healthcare professionals are walking away in their droves because they can no longer afford to work for the health service or take the mounting work pressures caused by ever greater cutbacks and recruitment freezes.

“The health service is operating at breaking point and highly reliant on staff goodwill and voluntary working practices. Mr Hamilton needs to resolve these issues before demanding even more from healthcare staff”, McAdam concluded.
