Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail spoke today (August 6) on BBC Radio 4’s World at Oneprogramme in defence of check-off, a system by which union members have their dues automatically deducted from their salaries.
Â
Now check-off is under threat, as the government announced proposals to put an end to check-off for public sector workers.
Â
The move would mean that public sector workers would have to switch to paying their union dues via direct debit instead of the simple check-off process, which has been in place for decades and is still embraced by the private sector, including such large companies as British Airways and Rolls-Royce.
