You can’t burn down our rainbow!

Anti-gay bigots can’t rain on Brighton Pride’s parade
Taylor Humphris, Friday, August 28th, 2015

As soon as I stepped on the train I saw big bright dresses, suitcases full of make-up and a whole carriage full of singing drag queens, from this point on I knew Brighton Pride was going to be the biggest, most extravagant event I had ever been to.

I followed the huge crowds down to the pier where I stood alongside 30,000 people beaming with pride and happiness as the parade went past!

The best part of the parade for me was the brightly painted pink bus which was rammed with heterosexual families, couples and friends simply there to show their support for the LGBT community from all over the UK.

I spent the majority of the day in Preston Park watching all the acts and performances trying out every extraordinary flavour slush puppy they had.

Like many other positive huge events there were large groups of anti-gay protesters expressing their unwanted opinions.

Lonely wolves

I referred to them as a pack of lonely wolves as they were the angry aggressive ones trying to burn down our rainbow.

The most surprising part was when they were approached by a man with his wife and daughter asking them why they felt so strongly against LGBT people.

This isn’t anything new for gay men, transgender and lesbians, or even anyone who doesn’t fit the average mediocre stereo-type.

I personally think people react to things they don’t understand but is it fair to blame those who are different for what you’re not familiar with?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it’s how you express that opinion that counts.

I’m fortunate enough to be very close to one of the most amazing ladies I have ever met, LADY D. She is a heterosexual woman who lives to entertain and perform for the gay world.

There she was in her puffy multi-coloured ravishing dress on stage in front of hundreds of people belting out a Shirley Bassey song; she made my face light up like she does every single time!

I take my bright pink fluffy hat off to all heterosexual people who unite with the gay community, especially this lady who has previously gone out of her way to make sure I am comfortable with who I am and what I am.

Roll on Brighton pride 2016!
