Support trades councils call

Unite delegate highlights trades councils’ role in labour movement
Hajera Blagg, Monday, September 21st, 2015

Unite delegate Pat Stuart spoke on the last day of the TUC conference (Wednesday September 16) in support of trades councils.

Pat called trades councils, which bring together unions to work and campaign around issues affecting working people in their local workplaces and communities, an “intrinsic part of the labour movement”.

“I’ve always respected our trades councils, where they do things like stand up for refugees when no one else is, where they’re carrying out campaigns to support people in the local community,” she said.

“Bringing together people from different unions is of invaluable help when it comes to a local dispute that’s of importance to local people, because a trades council can come into its own then, as a means of support in sustaining people in dispute,” Pat added.
