Len says wear red
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey is asking members and staff to wear red on Friday, October 23, in support of Show Racism the Red Card.
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the UK’s anti-racism educational charity which uses the high-profile status of football and players to help tackle racism.
The date sits alongside activities and celebrations to mark Black History Month 2015 and also falls within the annual â€Fortnight of Action’ in Scotland and Wales.
“I am extremely proud of the positive and productive working relationship that Unite has established with SRtRC over a number of years,” said McCluskey.
“I very much welcome the joint initiatives we have worked on with them to take their work to our members,” he said.
SRtRC chief executive Ged Grebby said, “Friday October 23rd is a great opportunity for Unite members to demonstrate their commitment to equality and to show their support for Show Racism the Red Card.
“By wearing any item of red clothing on the day, even red socks, you can help us raise awareness and much needed funds to fight racism and help unite our communities.”
As part of the joint working Len has written to all members to ask them to support â€Wear Red Day’ to help raise awareness of the work that SRtRC does and raise some much-needed cash to fund their anti-racism projects.
To take part – wear something red and donate £1 to the cause. You can send your photographs and messages to SRtRC via Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #SRtRCWearRedDay and the campaign will help to promote your show of solidarity and publicise your efforts.
Money raised will go directly towards increasing the volume of anti-racism educational interventions delivered to young people and adults across the UK via their schools and places of work.
