Wrexham fans support Shotton
Jody Whitehill, Monday, April 25th, 2016

Community support for Shotton Tata steelworkers scored a goal this Saturday (April 23) when Wrexham AFC fans paid tribute to Unite steelworkers at the historic Glyndwr Racecourse Stadium.

Unite members from the local steelworks were invited on to the pitch before kick-off to promote support for the steel industry in Wales.

Shotton steelworkers stood proudly on the pitch behind a save our steel banner. They thanked Wrexham Football Club and its supporters for their hospitality and the chance of giving them a platform to promote the campaign and their efforts to save local jobs.

Shotton Unite branch chair, Anthony Simpson, who attended with his children, was delighted with the crowd’s response.

He said, “We have Wrexham fans who are employees of Shotton Steelworks who went to raise the profile of the plant and ensure it has its voice heard in the debate about the future of steelmaking both locally and throughout the UK.

“Shotton continues to deliver excellent performance in making a range of unique products. Our workers are highly skilled, flexible and efficient. When you put these together Unite believes you have a long term viable and profitable business.”

Applauded by well-wishers – the day showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that this community backs Shotton steelworkers 100 per cent.
