Your fight is our fight

Unite senior rep and Bentley maintenance technician Stuart Davis shares with us below his experience as part of a delegation to Mexico with Workers Uniting.

Workers Uniting, a joint collaboration between Unite and the United Steel Workers has been in existence since 2008.

Last week, some 30 delegates from the USA, Canada, Ireland and the UK met in Mexico City to discuss and debate globalisation and what it means to trade unionists on both sides of the Atlantic.

In a weeklong series of workshops, we discovered many similarities between ourselves. Whether it’s fighting injustices in the workplace, combating racism or attempting to improve work-life balance, workers the world over are pretty much the same.

Our whole lives are globalising — our employers, our economy, our politics. And for this reason, our movement has to globalise, too. While we can all think globally, we still act locally and it is this part we need to turn on its head.

Workers Uniting needs to grow and trade unions from other countries need to get involved. Transatlantic is good but just for a minute think of a worldwide movement, with influence at every workplace of every multinational in every country.

The race to the bottom could be over.

Why Mexico? April 20^th saw the tenth anniversary of the murder of Los Mineros members Hector Alvarez Gomez and Mario Castilo Rodriguez, striking steelworkers at the Arcelor Mittal plant in Lazaro Cardenas who were shot on the picket line.

In a sign of international solidarity, Workers Uniting marched with Los Mineros to demand that injustices like these are never repeated anywhere else and that compensation for the families of Hector and Mario is duly paid.
