Hate crime
Attacks on disabled must stop

Unite delegate and TUC general council disabled workers’ rep Sean McGovern told conference this afternoon (September 9) how the government’s demonisation of benefit claimants and out of work citizens has led to hate crime against disabled people.
Â
In a motion to resist the attack on disabled people, Sean described how “in recent years we have seen the government divide and rule, pushing working and non-working people against each other.”
Â
The result of these misconceptions has led to a growth in prejudice against the welfare system, accused of being abused by â€scroungers’ instead of the support system that has restored dignity and independence to the lives of people who need it.
Â
“Disabled people have been attacked from all sides. Benefits that were given to empower disabled people, and give them independence, have been slashed,” Sean said.
Â
“And in the race to the bottom, discrimination in the workplace has increased. As suspicion of benefit claimants increasing so is hate crime against disabled people, that is why I support this motion.”
Â
The motion was carried.
