Giving hope to working people
Amanda Campbell, Sunday, September 13th, 2015Pictured is Unite general secretary Len McCluskey being interviewed by ITV news at this year’s annual TUC conference.
The 147th Congress is being held in Brighton from today Sunday September 13 to Wednesday September 16. You can follow proceedings at #TUC15.
The TUC says that economic growth might be back but millions of workers have seen the worst decline in real wages since Victorian times.
The government looks increasingly out of touch with the concerns of ordinary people, ignoring the damage to the economy too.
It is against this backdrop that the trade union movement will be debating, discussing and deciding how it can take action and organise to defend the people it represents and set out a vision for a better way.
Unite will be playing its part in full and will be moving three motions on productivity, stopping the trade union bill and pay and collective bargaining.
Before the conference started Len McCluskey told Unite delegates the conference had to send out a message of hope, and determination.
Confidence Â
“It’s most important that people don’t get depressed. There’s now a mood of change and that we don’t just have to accept the way things are. Our message has to be one of confidence and our role has got to be about giving confidence to working people.
“This year’s TUC conference is about giving clear leadership to our communities.”
