Harnessing Labour’s talents

Unite call to build strong shadow cabinet
Unite Live team, Sunday, September 25th, 2016

An active industrial strategy which supports British manufacturing, decent jobs and reconnecting communities battered by Conservative cuts are among the issues for Unite at this year’s Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

The conference began in buoyant mood today (September 25) following yesterday’s announcement that Jeremy Corbyn had won a definitive victory in the Party’s leadership ballot.

Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey welcoming his re-election said, “Congratulations are due to Jeremy and his team for the positive campaign that they ran and this well-deserved victory.

“This election contest was needless, a distraction that the Labour party and its members could have done without, but after a summer of unrest we can now look forward to the party taking on this Conservative government, exposing its divisive and elitist policies.”

McCluskey went on to urge Labour MPs to mark this signal – made twice now in one year – about the direction they want for the party.

“This includes respecting and supporting the elected leader and his team,” he insisted,  “no more sniping, plotting and corridor coups.”

He added, “I hope that all the talents of the party can now be harnessed and MPs return to serve in the shadow cabinet as Jeremy builds the alternative government the people of this country dearly need.”
